border_color_top=&#8221;#c8a046&#8243; border_style_top=&#8221;dotted&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>Life and facts<\/h2>\n<p>Wilhelm I. was the eldest son of King Friedrich I. of W\u00fcrttemberg and Princess Auguste Karoline of Brunswick-Wolfenb\u00fcttel.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>After Wilhelm&#8217;s youth, which was marked by disputes with his father, he took over the reigns of W\u00fcrttemberg in the &#8220;year without a summer&#8221; of 1816, which was marked by bad harvests and famine.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>After taking office, he initiated <strong>comprehensive reforms<\/strong> that manifested themselves in the approval of the W\u00fcrttemberg estates for the constitution on September 25, 1819.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>During his 48-year reign, the Kingdom of W\u00fcrttemberg was transformed from differently governed principalities into a state with a common identity and a thoroughly organized administration.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In addition to his successful domestic policy, he pursued an ambitious foreign policy throughout his reign. In addition to the great powers of Prussia and Austria, he saw the kingdoms of Bavaria, Saxony, Hanover and W\u00fcrttemberg as the crystallization nuclei of another <strong>great German power<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Even if these plans never came to fruition, they ensured <strong>purposeful policies<\/strong> throughout his reign. Wilhelm was the only German monarch to be forced to recognize the imperial constitution of 1848.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>After the failure of the 1848\/49 revolution, he pursued a restorative policy that countered his pre-revolutionary liberal image.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>He died in 1864 at Rosenstein Castle in Cannstatt.
