Life and facts<\/h2>\n

King Harald V. is descended from the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Gl\u00fccksburg, a collateral line of the House of Oldenburg. He is the son of Olav V. and Crown Princess M\u00e4rtha of Norway, a born princess of Sweden. His motto, like that of his grandfather and father, is “Alt for Norge” – All for Norway.<\/p>\n

He lived in Sweden for a few months during the Second World War<\/strong>, and later in Maryland in the USA, but returned to Norway with his family on June 7, 1945.<\/p>\n

He graduated from high school and later completed his education at the Norwegian Military Academy and Balliol College in Oxford in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n

In 1958, he served as Crown Prince Regent<\/strong> in the Council of State during his father’s absence. He is related to the Swedish and Belgian royal families through his mother and to the British royal family through his grandmother. As the great-grandson of King Edward VII, he even still holds a rank in the British line of succession.<\/p>\n

\n

He has been King of Norway since January 17, 1991.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Crown Prince Harald married Sonja Haraldsen, a commoner, in Oslo Cathedral on August 29, 1968. They have two children Princess M\u00e4rtha Louise and Crown Prince Haakon; he is now a grandfather of five.<\/p>\n

As a regatta sailor<\/strong>, King Harald V represented Norway in several yachting competitions. He was a participant as a sailor in the Olympic Games in 1964,1968 and 1972.<\/p>\n

He became the sailing world champion in 1987<\/strong>, and at the 2018 world championship he still finished third.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

He also campaigned intensively for the 1994 Winter Olympics to Lillehammer. He is the recipient of many prestigious medals, and the Prince Harald Coast in Antarctica is named after him.<\/p>\n
