Life and facts

Sartre was born in Paris, the son of naval officer Jean-Baptiste Sartre. His father died of yellow fever only 15 months later. His mother Anne Marie (a cousin of Albert Schweitzer), still very young, moved back in with her parents after her widowhood, where Jean-Paul grew up under the influence of his grandfather, Charles Schweitzer. Until the age of 10, he had little social contact outside his family, in which he was the only child.

In 1920, Sartre attended Henri IV, a boarding school. Here he befriended fellow writer-to-be Paul Nizan, who introduced him to contemporary literature.

Together they decided to pursue studies at the École Normale Supérieure, the elite university for teaching subjects.

In 1924, Sartre and Nizan were accepted to the École Normale Supérieure, and in 1928, in the recruiting examination for the post of high school professor, Sartre received only the 50th place, which was insufficient for hiring.

Now that Nizan had married, Sartre wanted to do the same, but his parents rejected the first girlfriend. A little later, while preparing for the second attempt at “l’agrégation,” he met his future companion Simone de Beauvoir, who, like him, was working toward it.

After teaching in Paris during the 1937/38 school year, he was drafted when France declared war on Germany in September 1939.

He spent the time in Alsace and wrote diligently on his novels.

In the postwar years, Sartre was then the tone-setting French intellectual, raising his voice on the larger and also some smaller problems of the nation. His works were considered the main works of the new philosophy of existentialism, mainly created by him.

In 1964 Sartre was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, although he had announced his refusal in advance and then maintained it.

From 1973 he was practically blind and also unable to write. His death was registered worldwide and at his funeral in Paris 50,000 people followed the coffin.
